Weekend in Black and White - First Roll

My Mother-in-Law recently gave me one of my late Father-in-Law's cameras. A Kodak Brownie Hawkeye.

I took it, cleaned it up and put a roll of film in it, and much to my delight it works.

So these are old school black and white photographs. I took these photographs at a  local Harley Davidson dealership here in Tulsa.

I found a local lab that sells and processes the 120 film that the camera uses. Now that I have the first roll behind me I'm going to go take some more. Got any ideas for me for subjects?

Cool beans! See if you can find something from you father-in-law's generation - 20 to 50 years ago. Have fun with it.

How about pics of a geocache expedition?

A new toy - or rather an old toy that's new to you. I had one when I was in high school. It will take good photos if you live within its limitations. If I recall correctly it has a fixed shutter speed and fixed focus. This means hold still and shoot outdoors. The lens is subject to flare if aimed towards the sun. Your photo of the bike is shot with the sun to your left front and shows flare on the left side. The penguin and eagle are lit from the side and look pretty sharp. A pdf of the original users manual is at http://www.cameramanuals.org/kodak_pdf/kodak_brownie_hawkeye.pdf

Have fun!

Lovely! You're going to have so much fun with that. The flare gives a dreamlike quality to the bikes, which is pleasing. I love all the detail on the eagle, and the penguin's downright fun. I showed your post to my husband (an old camera fanatic) and he was delighted for you ;)

How exciting! Mmmm... Ideas? I keep getting flashes of 1960's Christmas trees, or five little kids lined up on the couch with their Easter baskets. That's much help is it?

Have fun!

These shots look great. Like the Harley place. Just surprised the camera still worked.

Nothing like a vintage camera for taking vintage photographs. A few family photos taken with this camera would have a wonderful nostalgic feel. Take it on a short family vacation and make the 21st century look like the 50's. I love this post. Makes me want to hunt down an old box camera and start using it.

You're inspiring me to do the same with my Dad's Yashika Mat.
The best subject for B&W is facial closeups.

These are great. I was just thinking of your shopping trips and other excursions with your beautiful wife and how the old school B&W can interpret those experiences....

Golly I would be lost trying to come to terms with this AND with film as well. I do hope you enjoy yourself. It was wonderful of your MiL to gift it to you.
