Tulsa Run 2010

16560006

I ran the Tulsa Run 15K yesterday with about 4200 or so other people. As you can see I start way at the back. After the gun started it took me about 3 minutes to get to the starting line. Psychologically it is better for me to start at the back and pass people steadily than to start at the front and get trampled.

16560007

A couple hundred yards past the starting line. It always amazes me how fast the lead runners are. Up until the Iraq War a group of soldiers from Fort Sill would show up and do their chants the whole way. I'm looking forward to the day when they return.

16560010

Some of the many bands along the route. I really appreciate these guys. I don't think they are used to getting up this early.

16560011

Runners are litterbugs, especially down the road from water stops. I am a litterbug also. I have learned the art of drinking while running. It is more running than drinking but little things like that is why I finished 3385th instead of 3387th.

16560013

Go Go Boots. I remember being a young lad when Go Go Boots were popular. I remember my mother being scandalized by the short skirts and boots. She said that she just couldn't understand the attraction. I did,and still do.

16560014

I've noticed that running skirts are getting more and popular with woman runners. So is the next big thing running tutus?

16560016

Lets see, we have the big bad wolf, little red riding hood, and the woodsman.

16560022

Looping the Loop over Riverside Drive.

16560024

This guy was cheating.

That was it folks. I was experimenting with a disposable camera. I had very mixed results. It only had 27 exposures on it so I was not able to memorialize my thrilling finish.

It's Sunday, time for the all time most often quoted running scripture. From Hebrews 12:1;

"...let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us."

Halloween 2010 #1

Halloween started early. A lady I work with brought her two grandchildren to the office. Her grandson posed proudly for a photo.

20101029_4

His sister was having none of it.

20101029_5

They liked my atomic fireballs though.

Later I went to the Halloween Party SuperPizzaBoy's school was having. Yep, you heard me, Halloween Party! Yeah private school. For those of you aghast at the thought of a Haloween Part, as far as I know none of the little devils has turned into a satan worshiper, yet.

Sweetie was there helping out. She is here, there, and everywhere. She doesn't stay still long enough to get a non-blurred photo.

20101029_11

They had a pumpkin raffle and I won two of them.

20101029_21

You should have heard all the grumbling, "I can't believe he won two of them." Hey I bought five tickets and only won two pumpkins. I was counting on at least three.

But you know what the big news of the night was?

20101029_23

Bonnie and Clyde made a special appearance!

20101029_24

Aren't they cute? Bonnie especially is very sweet.

I just love Halloween. How is yours going?

Weekend Reflections - American Hippo

IMG_3520

I was in midtown Tulsa yesterday so I popped into the Philbrook museum for quick stroll around their gardens. Above is "American Hippo" by John Kearney.

John Hope Franklin Reconciliation Park Dedication

IMG_3493

I crashed a party today. The grand opening of the long awaited opening of the Dr. John Hope Franklin Reconciliation Park in the Greenwood area of downtown Tulsa.

The Park features a 25 foot tall memorial tower that depicts the history of the African American struggle starting in Africa and continuing until today and includes several segments concerning the Tulsa Race Riot of 1921.

IMG_3477

All sorts of people were there. Including people with lots bigger cameras than mine.

IMG_3492

There were politicians there. Many of them men with makeup on, perfect teeth, and nice haircuts. There were also lots of school kids.

IMG_3483

And a marching band.

IMG_3471

I'll have more to say on this great day for Tulsa later.

My Worst Job, Ever

Mrs. Albright over at Real Housewives of Oklahoma wants to know what our worst job ever was. My first thought was, "I have never had a bad job." Then I thought, well wait a minute...

My second job out of college was working as the Plant Process Engineer for a large natural gas processing plant in a small town in east Texas for a large independent oil company. It was the late 1970's and the first oil boom was in full swing and things were wild.

image-14

The Plant Superintendent was a drunk and on the take. The Area Manager was in way over his head. The plant was old, overloaded, and very profitable. Shoot, everything connected with the business was profitable at the time.

I worked there for about nine months until I got transferred to another plant located near Houston.

image-16

In those nine months, the plant had nine fires. Eight of those fires didn't hurt anybody.

image-15

One of the fires was a propane vapor flash in our refrigeration compression building. Three guys were walking into the building when the propane vapor in it ignited. There was no explosion just a flash like when you are trying to light your grill and it takes a while and then it goes "whuff" and it lights. Only this was on a lot bigger scale.

The guy leading the trio was burned very badly on his upper body, hands, face, and neck. He was a new employee only there a few months. He was terminated immediately, probably before the helicopter got him to the burn unit in Dallas. When he got out of the hospital months later the company gave him a contract job as a janitor in the office.

After the accident, something I'll never forget was seeing something that looked like cellophane hanging a metal handrail. I looked at it real close and it had whorls and patterns. I realized that it was the guy's skin from his hands that stuck to the rail as he staggered back out of the building after the flash and grabbed the rail.

The guy behind him was a more veteran employee. He was a Plant Operator which meant that he had to work a rotating shift. His main injuries were to the sides of his face. He was off work for several weeks with his injuries. When he came back, they kept him but made him work shifts even though he asked repeatedly just to work days as working nights caused him too much anxiety. He told me that his skin sounded like bacon in a frying pan when the flash fire happened.

The third guy was the Lead Mechanic. His burns were mainly his hands. They caused him a lot of discomfort. I remember being in the Plant Superintendent's staff meeting where he told the Maintenance Foreman to make sure that the mechanic was not allowed to go inside to warm his hands up in the winter. They were trying to make him retire you see.

I could tell you a lot more but I've probably wrote too much already. I was not happy with the slipshod half ass maintenance and operation of the place and the overheated concentration on production at the expense of safety. I was able to finagle myself a better job (I'm real good at finagling!) into a much safer situation

That company eventually got bought out by another company and the plant was spun off to yet another company. The Gas Processing industry is very safety oriented now. Most companies keep the safety department's management totally apart from the operations management so there is not the pressure to continue unsafe situations. Plus there are lots more Federal and State regulation of safety. Things are night and day compared between now and then.

I became an Operations Manager in Oklahoma in the mid 1980's. I only had one lost time injury among my 55 guys and gals during my tenure (which is one injury too many, so I'm not bragging.) I'm not sure how good a boss I was but my biggest fear was having to call somebody's wife or parent to tell them that their husband or son was hurt. I never had to do that (the one injury was a sore back) and I'm grateful for that.

Go check out the RHOK Stars. Tell them what your worst job was.

My World - Washington Irving Park - Bixby, Oklahoma #2

20101023_20

The long suffering Washington Irving agreed to watch our mutts while we took a walk around the park.

Washington Irving camped near here  back in 1832 during his tour of the west.

20101023_34

The City of Bixby has made this not just a park in honor of Washington Irving. It also has several memorials.

There is a memorial to the victims of the 9-11 attack. A structural member from one of the collapsed buildings.

20101023_16

There is a memorial for the children died in the Murrah Building bombing in Oklahoma City.

20101023_14

There is a butterfly garden memorial for a young Bixby housewife and mother who was brutally murdered.

20101023_40

I don't mean to make it all doom and gloom. Its not. The park is a great place for a boy and his dog to take a walk.

20101023_24

Interesting trees

Oklahoma Video Game Expo 2010

Yesterday was windy and rainy in Tulsa so SuperPizzaBoy loaded up and went to the Tulsa suburb of Bixby to check out the Oklahoma Video Game Expo 2010. We walked into it and SPB took off inside, I yelled, "Hey Pizza Boy, get back here." The lady taking the money laughing said "Yeah Pizza Boy get back here." We paid, got our hands stamped and off he went. He kept asking me how the lady knew his name.

Picnik collage OVGE #2

It was amazing. OVGE is about "Classic Gaming" which seems to be early 1980's to early 1990's. All the old systems clogging up your attics, closets, and garages were represented. Plus many arcade games.

Picnik collage OVGE 1A

SPB must have played on almost two dozen systems. Most of which he had never seen before. Games of all different genres. It was amazing to watch him pick up the controller and start playing these games. Young people today, they are amazing.

Picnik collage OVGE #3

I loved watching him so engrossed and absorbed in something. He played the games until he was exhausted. Then "Lets go home Dad." "OK, lets go home Son."

Hey you know its Sunday, lets have a prayer for our kids.

"Whate'er I do, things great or small"

Whate'er I do, things great or small
Whate'er I speak or frame.
Thy glory may I seek in all,
Do all in Jesus' name.

My Father, for His sake I pray.
Thy child accept and bless
And lead me by Thy grace to-day
In paths of righteousness. Amen.

I knew this was the right prayer for today when I saw an ad on the page for a web version of Pac Man.

Reclusive mountain lion at San Diego Zoo. Sorry for the fuzziness. I had to use lots of magnification and focus in between the wire grids of his enclosure.

Fall

I'm all ready for Fall. We have everything but the cool weather so far.

20101016_116

We are still wearing short sleeves at night here in Oklahoma.

20101016_114

I know not to complain about mother nature. It will cool off soon enough.

20101016_115

Fall is the best time of the year here in Oklahoma. Warm days, cool nights, low humidity.

20101016_117

It doesn't last very long though.
